Tendon Repair

Tendon Repair

What is it?
Tendon repair is a surgical procedure to restore the function of a torn or ruptured tendon, which connects muscle to bone and facilitates movement.

When is it needed?

  • Complete tendon tear (e.g., Achilles, biceps, rotator cuff, flexor tendons in hand)

  • Severe partial tears not responding to rest or physiotherapy

  • Injuries due to trauma, sports, or degeneration

Procedure

  • Surgery is performed under local, regional, or general anaesthesia

  • Torn tendon ends are stitched together (end-to-end repair)

  • Grafts or anchors may be used if there is a tissue gap

  • Immobilization with a splint or brace is applied after surgery

Recovery & Rehabilitation

  • Immobilization for a few weeks

  • Physiotherapy begins gradually to restore motion and strength

  • Full recovery typically takes 6–12 weeks or more, depending on the tendon and severity of injury

  • Early rehab prevents stiffness and adhesions

Goal

  • Restore strength, function, and mobility of the affected joint

  • Prevent permanent weakness or loss of movement
