Total Hip Replacement

What is Total Hip Replacement?
Total Hip Replacement is a surgical procedure in which the damaged parts of the hip joint are replaced with artificial implants (prostheses). It is commonly performed for severe arthritis, fractures, or hip joint damage that limits daily activities.
Why It’s Done
Severe hip pain limiting walking, bending, or climbing stairs
Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or avascular necrosis
Hip fractures that cannot be treated with other methods
Failure of previous hip surgeries
What Happens During Surgery
The damaged femoral head (ball) is removed and replaced with a metal or ceramic ball
The hip socket (acetabulum) is resurfaced and fitted with a plastic or ceramic liner
The new joint allows smooth, pain-free movement
Recovery
Most patients start walking within a day or two after surgery
Full recovery and return to daily activities typically takes 6–12 weeks
Physiotherapy is essential to restore strength and flexibility
Most patients experience significant pain relief and improved mobility
